PURPOSE


We need occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) to join and serve on Missouri state boards and commissions to: Amplify the effectiveness and positive impact of the board/commission’s goals for the greatest number of Missourians. Advocate for the occupational therapy profession. Diversify the perspective of the board/commission in order to improve decision-making for the populations we serve.


WHY SHOULD I SERVE ON A STATE BOARD OR COMMISSION?
Because you are qualified in your experience as an OTP to identify problems and create solutions to assist the population to thrive. We do this with individuals and can easily apply the occupational perspective towards fellow Missourians.


WHEN CAN I LOOK FOR A BOARD OR COMMISSION POSITION?
Right now, today! There are vacancies and positions expiring all the time.


WHEN WILL I FIND OUT IF I’VE BEEN SELECTED?
For the majority of boards and commissions, state law requires the Governor’s nominee to be approved or “confirmed" by the Missouri Senate. The Senate considers appointments only when it is in session, which is generally January through May, or when the Governor calls a Special Session.

How to Apply for a MO State Board or Commission

We need OTPs on the following boards:

  • Alzheimer's State Plan Task Force
    • Function: The task force shall assess all state programs that address Alzheimer's disease and update and maintain an integrated state plan to overcome the challenges caused by Alzheimer's disease.The state plan shall include implementation steps and recommendations for priority actions based on this assessment.
    • Commitment: Not listed

      • Home care professional
      • Adult day services professional
      • Licensed skilled nursing facility
      • Department of of higher education and workforce development with knowledge of workforce training
      • Voluntary health organizations in Alzheimer’s disease care, support, and research (2 positions)
  • Board of Nursing Home Administrators
    • Mission: The purpose of the Board of Nursing Home Administrators is to protect and advocate for Missouri’s long-term care residents by licensing prospective and current long-term care administrators to ensure the highest quality of care and life in Missouri’s long-term care homes. A long-term care administrator is someone who administers, manages, supervises, or is in general administrative charge of a long-term care facility (skilled care, intermediate care, assisted living and residential care facility II).
    • Function: Duties and responsibilities of the Board of Nursing Home Administrators are to develop and enforce standards for long-term care administrators; formulate appropriate examinations, and; issue, renew, and discipline licenses. The board investigates complaints; evaluates and approves continuing education courses to meet license renewal requirements; controls a trainee program for prospective long-term care administrators; and maintains a register of all licensed long-term care administrators including applicants practicing under a temporary emergency license.
    • Commitment: bi-monthly 8 hour meetings

  • State Board of Health and Senior Services
    • Function: The Missouri State Board of Health reviews and advises on the rules and regulations promoted by the Department of Health and Senior Services; and provides comment to the Director of the Department of Health and Senior Services regarding the promulgation of rules and regulations by the Department of Health, formulation of the department's proposed budget, and planning for and operation of the Department of Health and Senior Services.
    • Commitment: 5 hours
    • Vacancy slots for: Individuals having a special interest in public health, disability-related issues, or gerontology (2 positions)
  • Coordinating Board for Early Childhood
    • Mission: Missouri’s ECE system is coordinated, accessible, adequately resourced and of high quality, designed to promote the well-being of young children and their families.
    • Commitment: 4 meetings/yr, 5 hr meetings - 20 hours/year

  • Missouri Assistive Technology Advisory Council
    • Mission: The Missouri Assistive Technology Advisory Council works to increase access to assistive technology for all Missourians with disabilities through a variety of programs and services.
    • Function: The Missouri Assistive Technology Advisory Council serves as the state grantee for the federal Assistive Technology Act, PL 108-364 and is responsible for administration of the state telecommunications equipment distribution program (RSMo 209.251-259) and the state assistive technology financial loan program (RSMo 191.865-867).
    • Commitment: 4 meetings per year

  • State Rehabilitation Council
    • Mission: The Missouri State Rehabilitation Council envisions a society that values all of its members equally and provides opportunities so that people are able to meet their needs, fulfill their dreams, and participate in society. Our mission is to assure that persons with disabilities have opportunities to be as productive as possible by advising Missouri Vocational Rehabilitation that services provided to persons with disabilities are of the highest quality, consumer-directed, responsive to consumer choice, effective, individualized, culturally specific, and relevant to labor market trends.
    • Function: The Missouri State Rehabilitation Council reviews, analyzes, and advises Missouri Vocational Rehabilitation regarding its performance on such issues as eligibility, services provided to consumers, and any other functions affecting persons with disabilities.
    • Commitment: 4 meetings/year

  • Missouri Statewide Independent Living Council
    • Mission: MOSILC advances independent living and the rights (civil and human) of people with disabilities, demanding consumer empowerment, control, equal access, and full integration. Vision: MOSILC envisions a Missouri in which people with disabilities live safely in the environment of their choice, are valued equally, and participate fully.
    • Function: Purpose: 1. Develop a State Plan for Independent Living (SPIL) through external input, which ensures independent living for Missourians. 2. Advocate for the accomplishment of the State Plan for IL objectives. 3. Monitor, review, and evaluate the implementation of the SPIL. 4. Be a statewide catalyst for independent living.
    • Commitment: 4 meetings/year

      • Representatives from Centers for Independent Living, parents and guardians of individuals with disabilities, advocates of and for individuals with disabilities, representatives from private businesses, representatives from organizations that provide services for individuals with disabilities, and other appropriate individuals (4)
